Reusing Shopping Bags
Reusing Shopping Bags
Every time you go shopping, you most likely receive a plastic bag to carry out your new purchases. Some of these bags are fancy with branding, while others are simpler, but they all have a single element in common: they are, by in large, bad for the environment as they are not biodegradable and can only be recycled when dropped off a specialized centers. As a result, a growing number of companies, from Whole Foods Markets to Wal Mart Stores, have introduced reusable shopping bags in their stores.
Plastic is potentially hazardous for the environment because of the way it is produced: only thick plastics, labeled as plastic number one and number two, can be recycled in mainstream recycling programs, while less thick plastics (including that used in most bags) require specializing recycling facilities. While many stores are offering recycling for these bags, not everyone takes advantage of these offers, and, as a result, many plastic bags end up in landfills.
Utilizing re-usable shopping bags can allow you to use a single set of bags for a period of years. Often times, the bags are made from recycled materials and are biodegradable themselves, further solidifying their environmental efficiency. If you're going to take advantage of these offers, make sure that the type of bags you choose work well for your shopping purposes: you'll want to ensure they're sufficiently flexible and have enough room for your shopping trips, while fitting easily in your mode of transportation - that you, you'll ensure that you can always use the bags on every shopping trip that you make.
Transitioning to permanent shopping bags, rather than discarding disposable bags might take some adjustment, but it's an easy way to get great environmental dividends and begin to live a more green lifestyle with only minimal adjustment in your daily rhythms of life.
